Uganda – the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the reception of Polish refugees

About 75 years ago, polish refugees from the Soviet Union arrived in Uganda, with the Anders Army. On this occasion, at the National Museum in Uganda on November 20, 2017 was held a conference called: “Refugees in Uganda, then and now – the history of the Polish Refugees, former Soviet prisoners in Siberia, in Eastern Africa and the situation offrefugees in Uganda nowadays.” The conference was organized under the auspices of the Polish Embassy in Nairobi, the EU delegation in Kampala and the Honorary Consul in Kampala.

Participants in the conference confirmed: Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu - Minister of Tourism, Nature and Antiquity of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Attilio Pacifici - Ambassador of the European Union in Uganda and Mr. Maciej Łuczak, Senator of the Republic of Poland. At the invitation of charge d'affaires, Mr. Sergius Wolski replied to Mr. Cyrus Rod, Director of DSBJ Africa Branch in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Gentlemen had the opportunity to meet and talk about the current situation and cooperation between Poland and Uganda.

About 2750 Poles, mostly children and mothers who were displaced from Poland to Siberia at the beginning of World War II, came to the Uganda village - Koji - about 75 years ago. After extremely violent conditions in prisons and labor camps in Siberia, refugees came to East Africa where they found a warm welcome and a safe home.

Today Uganda is home to the largest group of refugees and asylum seekers in the world. The country is praised for its open approach to refugees who receive a piece of land from the authorities, work permits, freedom of movement and access to social services, including medical services and education. These actions lead to the reduction and ultimately the refugee dependence on humanitarian aid.

- What have we all learnt from our history?
- Do the refugees nowadays still find a warm welcome and a safe home in Uganda?
- Does the international community do all what is required to support Uganda government in its efforts?
- Do we all do what is needed for refugees?
The main goal of the conference was to answer these questions.
